Smile Style

With COVID being where it is, many of us have lost our sense of style, at least this writer has.  At times I’ve felt that my fashion sense is lost forever, only to be found in some parallel universe on the other side of this global pandemic.  I find sweatpants and oversized T-shirts to be among some of the only real comforts I have left.  But what am I really telling myself?  That if no one can see me, it doesn’t matter what I look like?  How sad.  At least, I find it truly uninspiring to think this way.

Recently, I find myself picking out a beautiful outfit, one to really stun the masses,  but then I catch myself and change.  Do I want to be so uncomfortable just to look a certain way?  Who’s gonna see it anyway?  Does it matter?  It most certainly does.  Feeling good and looking good are truly cyclical.  One perpetuates the other and so on and so on, so just do it!

We’ve talked extensively about my recent motherhood, ad nauseum I’m sure, however it has dictated quite a bit of my life.  As of late, it’s combination with a homebody existence perpetuated by this insane disease, has intensified my desire for leggings and oversized top wear.  I have yet to cave to the Tik Tok legging trend, the ones that make your derriere voluptuous, but I have definitely been guilty of living in leggings longer than I should.  So how do I stop this madness?  This has been a question I’ve been wracking my brain about lately.

Joy.  One word, but the one word I need to remember.  As Marie Kondo taught me, if a piece of clothing does not “spark joy”, I should thank it and move along.  The “thanking” it piece has really helped me separate from some truly horrendous clothing; pieces that do not make me look anything but mediocre when I should only look and feel fabulous.  My opinion on myself is really the only opinion that matters to me, and that opinion recently has been a lot quieter than it normally is.

I urge you to get in your closet and find the things that make you smile, the pieces that scream “you”!  PUT THEM ON.  I am giving you permission to wear your fanciest dress, your most bougie top, your sparkliest shoes, that glittery eyeshadow you love, those sneakers you don’t want a single smudge on, and everything that makes a smile spread from ear to ear on your beautiful face.  Just because someone, or anyone, can’t see you, doesn’t mean that your image is not important.  How you see yourself can greatly impact the way you treat yourself, and how you treat yourself can greatly impact your ability to take care of the ones you love.  Do yourself and everyone a favor, and dress to your heart’s content.  Floral clothing makes me feel a type of way, a good type of way, and I am allowing myself to stock up on what makes me so incredibly and inexplicably cheerful because why not?  In a time where I find myself questioning what makes me truly happy, I am allowing for the obvious.  Floral everything.  What’s your floral?  Get after it my love.
