Back to School the Healthy Way

We’re prepping for college and study abroad send off, and the jitters and anxiety are real.

This is my second child going off to school and all of the emotions from the first time around are flowing back. Did I prepare them well enough for life on their own? Will they take good care of themselves? My goal is to set them up with enough knowledge of health and wellness to make incorporating them into their new routine as seamless as possible. Below are some of the tips I give my kids to keep immunity high and toxic chemicals away while at school.

A glass or stainless reusable water bottle– 20 years ago when I started blogging about minimizing plastic use, it wasn’t easy to find good substitutes. Now the options are endless, but it’s important to be discerning and look for certification that there is no BPA or lead in your reusable bottles. Glass and food grade stainless steel (I highly recommend avoiding aluminum due to leeching of material into the water) are the way to go. Our family loves glass because you can see what’s going on in the bottle and it tends to be easy to clean. Here’s a selection by Aquasana, a favorite of ours!

Coffee pods– My kids keep a Keurig coffee maker in their dorm rooms, and while I don’t love that pods are made from plastic, I do think that coffee is one of those valuable tools to get through college life. So, if they are going to drink coffee, I insist it be organic. Coffee and tea are very highly sprayed crops, but at least with organic coffee the chemicals are kept to a minimum. I’m a big fan of bulletproof coffee pods for great flavor and no pesticides!

Ear bud EMF protectors- Just the other day a lawsuit was won against the FCC for their outdated standards in regards to safe levels EMF (electromagnetic frequency). The safety guidelines were set in the 80’s when wireless devices didn’t exist. So companies who make products can create any level of radiation exposure.

This is such a scary concept so I have instilled in my kids that phones, laptops, and earbuds definitely shouldn’t be worn on their bodies. That said, technology is a huge part of their lives, and we need to find ways to minimize the impact. I like these Wavebud ear bud protector stickers for reducing harmful radiation waves to the head, and you can even use code OrganicKrush for 15% off!

Phone EMF protectors– Earbuds are not my only concern when it comes to increased body burden from devices. Let’s minimize radiation coming from the phones they are tethered to as well. Here are two companies I love and support: Safe Sleeve and Gadget Guard. All 6 of us in my family use these protectors. As you start to follow what is happening in the 5G and EMF world, you will feel relieved to be adding these layers of protection in as many ways as possible. Also, ask your kids to turn their phones on airplane mode and keep away from their heads while they sleep.

Cleansing Wipes for Dorm Room- It’s not too much to ask that they occasionally wipe down their shelves, desks, bed posts and door knobs right?! I worry about the harmful effects of Clorox and other toxic cleaning supplies, as those chemicals compromise health by adding to the body burden. Your body can’t process harmful chemicals, so instead they get stuck in the gut. These 7th Generation wipes are highly effective and non-invasive to your body, because they use natural potent essential oil.

Vitamin supply– We’re gangbusters for vitamins in our home, so I put together a wellness kit of vitamins for the kids to take away with them. Vitamins A, C, D, zinc, and iodine are essential to immune health. My kids take 5,000 mg of Vit C, 5,000 i.u of Vitamin D, 50 mg of zinc, and a tablet of seaweed iodine everyday, per various doctor recommendations.

While I do like the dropper and liquid forms of some of these vitamins, I stuck with tablets and pills for ease of consumption. Some of my favorite vitamin recommenders: Medical MediumDave Asprey of Bulletproof and Mary Ruth’s.

My emotions are running high as I prepare my kids for college and study abroad send offs, but it definitely makes me feel better knowing that they have some mom tools to maintain a healthy lifestyle on their own.

Here’s to helping all our kids fly,
Michelle
