Brighter Days

With the recent dismal weather, it can be hard to imagine that we are merely weeks away from the sights and smells of spring into summer. All the snow and rain we’ve had this season will soon give way to beautiful flowers and soft breezes, and the world will look fresh and ready for exploring. I urge you to allow yourself to fantasize. Picture the things you’d like to do to prepare and focus on what’s right around the corner.

Having recently relocated to my home island, I find my mind wandering to the sights and sounds of the ocean; the smell of the sand, the taste of the saltwater and the warm embrace of the sun. The island is a wonder during the warmer months. Not that there isn’t plenty to explore during the colder months, there’s just something about the magic of Long Islands’ particular locale when you can roam unencumbered by fluffy jackets and heavy boots. Walks along the water are calling my name, and I’m preparing myself for their particular brand of freedom.

Cleaning out your space can be a wonderful way to welcome in a new season. Every time I move, I relish in the thought of purging things that no longer serve me. Clothes that don’t make me happy, furniture that’s unnecessary in everyday life, linens that have seen better days, and kitchen items that serve no purpose. The feeling that floods my system when I pack up these items and then deliver them to my nearest donation center. It’s important to choose donation centers that align with your ideals and beliefs. Sometimes they can just be a convenient drop off center, and other times they can provide services that you believe to be beneficial. Here’s a list of some centers that will actually make pick up of needed items like furniture.

Exercising can be another great way to decrease some of the blues that come along with gross weather, and get your body ready for an activity-filled summer. I truly believe that stretching is a boring yet necessary preparation for physical activity. I know some people really enjoy stretching, and it has its moments with me, but overall I find myself counting the seconds meticulously held in each position. Getting your body ready for swimming, biking, hiking, whatever your plan is for outside movement, bears the same principle as stretching before you exercise. So find what works for you and then make it work for you.

Since my return from Philly, I have had one thing on my mind, I cannot wait to get to Montauk this summer.  Things have been moving at an accelerated pace, but in a much more confined environment, I am ready to slow it down.  The quaint and beautiful town, the dreamy beach scenery, the fresh seafood and produce.  Picture it now, your favorite swimsuit under some comfy walking around clothes, a fruity smoothie made fresh for you in your hand, and the sounds of the ocean setting the score to a sweet summer.  Don’t let the blues get you down, keep your head up and your feet moving in the right direction, brighter days are just around the corner.
