A year or two ago, matcha was seen as trendy and hipster…now it’s a classic health food staple. Fret not. If you are a little late to the game, we will break it down for you: Matcha is a powerful form of green tea used in Japanese tea ceremonies since the 12th century. Even way back then they knew that consuming it would help them feel amazing! In general, green teas are an excellent source of antioxidants–which may help to lower risk of certain types of cancer–but what separates matcha is that it has up to five times as much L-theanine as regular green tea. L-Theanine is a glutamate, that crosses blood-brain barriers rather quickly and is shown to decrease anxiety, enhance mood and improve focus and mental alertness. Woah. Who doesn’t want all that? In contrast, a cup of Joe might give you a jolt, but can also leave you feeling jittery. With less caffeine than coffee, matcha is a good choice for anyone looking for an energy boost without side effects, including a post-coffee crash.

While traditional teas require steeping leaves in hot water, matcha is composed of whole green tea leaves that are finely ground into a powder that is then mixed with hot water. Matcha devotees are drawn to the beverage not only for its frothy full-bodied flavor but for additional health claims such as improved metabolism, stronger immunity, and decreased inflammation. And its uses are far more widespread than tea time—the green powder can be added to smoothies, yogurt, sauces and even desserts.

At Organic Krush, we take our matcha seriously with offerings such as our Matcha Hemp Bites, Matcho Matcha Smoothie, and Iced Mint Matcha Latte.
